Measure

When I think of the word measure, a few things pop into my mind. The first thing that popped in there was Mary Poppins. Okay, I did not mean that play on words, but hey, it works! Anyway, what I think about is her song, “Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.” Spoonful. I guess you can call that a type of measurement.

The second thing that pops in my mind is the song, “Silver and Gold,” from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. “How do you measure its worth? Just by the pleasure it gives here on earth.”

And then my mind wanders off to the Broadway musical, Rent, with it’s famous song. How do you measure a year in a life? In inches, in miles of laughter and strife. In cups of coffee. In daylight, in sunsets. I know those are completely out of order, but the idea is there.

How do we measure something? What really comes to me is the word “worth.” How do we measure worth? Where do we find our worth? I guess that all depends on where we are, in what we believe.

If we are worldly people, our worth would be found in things such as silver and gold. It would be found in how many friends we have, how many followers on Instagram or Twitter, how many likes and shares on Facebook.

But when we measure our worth in Jesus Christ our

STOP

Lord and Savior, those things are not important. We don’t need to find our worth in material things.

Proverbs 31:10 explains how a virtuous wife has worth far above rubies. “The heart of her husband safely trusts her; so he will have no lack of gain” (verse 11). How she acts, how she carries herself, is what gives her this worth. Her worth is measured in fear of the Lord:

Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but the woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.

Proverbs 31:30

What is your worth? Where do you find it? The best way is through our faith in God. When we choose to believe and follow His Way, all that truly matters is how we walk. Nothing else matters.
